Francesca di Paoli, a gifted yet penniless chef, arrives in Jackson Hole in 1925. Rescued by William Sutton, the “steady” son of a dude ranching family, she begins to feel safe, until the historic Gros Ventre landslide buries her and William alive. Though they survive, the uncertainty in the valley, as a new lake forms perilously behind the slide debris, parallels the uncertainty of Francesca’s fate. William saves her again, finding her work in the Suttons’ ranch cookshack. There she meets William’s brother, Bryce, a charming wanderer. William and Bryce, already rivals for their parents’ approval, begin to vie for Francesca’s attention. Over the next two years, valley ranchers clash over a Park Service proposal to extend Yellowstone Park south to Jackson Hole. Bryce comes and goes, taking a piece of his parents’ and Francesca’s heart with him each time. Yet, when the Sutton’s Nez Perce uncle comes to the ranch to die, it is Bryce who helps nurse the sick man. William has never accepted his Nez Perce heritage and his uncle’s arrival rakes up the ire of an unsavory contingent in the valley. Men like Dieter Gross, who disdain Native Americans and foreigners like Francesca, may well resort to violence if they discover the Sutton ranch’s black foreman is seeing a white woman. Meanwhile the earth has not finished trembling, nor the river rising. When the flood waters retreat, who will be left standing?

Jackson Hole Journey Yellowstone series Book 4 edition by Linda Jacobs Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Jackson Hole Journey is the story of a dude ranch in 1920's Wyoming. It is a period of change in the West and Ms. Jacobs shows the conflicts that are occurring through this one dude ranch. It is a time of Prohibition, falling prices in the cattle industry, modernization, and ethnic friction. All of these seem to come together in the lives of the people on this ranch.

It is a story of the rivalry between two brothers for the acceptance of their parents and over the beautiful Italian cook that comes into their lives. Part of this rivalry has to do with their heritage as part Nez Perce Native Americans. There is always friction when the two brothers are together.

It is also the story of Francesca falling in love with the surroundings in Jackson Hole. Her plans to go to California are forgotten as she falls in love with the area as well as the family and the two brothers. Despite the struggle between the two brothers her love for the land grows stronger every day.

The story is a compilation of actual historical events from John D. Rockefeller's visit to look at buying up property to create the Grand Teton National Preserve to a tragic flash flood in the valley. Ms. Jacobs does an excellent job of giving us a view of what life would be like during the Roaring 20s in Jackson Hole. The struggle to keep and protect the land and ease into the changes that are occurring throughout the country. It shows how an individual can come to love the land, a place, and want to remain there.
An excellent job.

In 1925, Francesca di Paoli left Tuscany with plans to open a vineyard in California. When she reaches Jackson Hole on her trek west, she thinks the area surrounded by the majestic Tetons is beautiful. However, her other descriptor of peaceful ended almost as quickly as she considered it when she witnesses the violent lightning and booming thunder; the first of several dangerous natural disasters that place her and others in peril.

Needing money to complete her journey, she obtains a position as the cook at Snake River Dude Ranch owned by the Sutton family. Francesca feels fickle as she is attracted to steadfast William and charming Bryce Sutton. However, Bryce bows out and leaves the ranch when he realizes his older brother is in love with the cook. One year later Bryce finally returns home forcing Francesca to make up her mind and choose one of the siblings.

This is an enjoyable historical romance made fresh by the insightful look at the mid-1920s Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons; a divisive time over a controversial proposal to turn the area into national park. The lead triangle consists of strong protagonists, but it is the town and its rugged terrain that makes for a strong Americana.

Really enjoyed this book. The whole series is good!
I love Linda Jacobs books. I just wish they were more. I own each one of them. Yellowstone is my favorite place to visit and having books written about it is wonderful.
Waiting for the next one....
I enjoyed this book. It put me back in Yellowstone park and how people came to live out there.
It is such fun to read about both the history and geology of what is now a National Park. Linda just melds all the aspects of this region into a readable and fascinating tale. All of her Yellowstone series has been riveting, and full of variety of people, years, subjects and settings. I am so glad that a former supervisor in the National Park Service turned me on to her books! What a delight she is!
As with the other Yellowstone novels there is much to be learned. The history is interesting and the stories are very well written.
